Report on Kids' Training Week 2007

The main activities were carried out at Boston Lodge Works but small groups also completed tasks at other sites, whilst each morning various gangs could be spotted at Harbour Station helping with carriage cleaning among other jobs. They were treated to a welcome evening meal on their first Saturday at Tan y Bwlch, and were there again last Tuesday evening carrying out a range of maintenance jobs. Once again they enjoyed a wonderful meal provided by Hilary Norton and her team who do all the catering for Kids Training Week.

On Wednesday they were all taken to the nearby beach for a football match and meal at Spooners. On Friday they tucked into a barbecue at Minffordd Yard. The children and young people stayed at Minffordd and Penrhyn hostels, whilst others resided in private homes. Chairman Dr John Prideaux and Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas visited the FR last Thursday to see the programme in action. They visited Boston Lodge and spoke with Wyn Symonds, Tony Williams and others. Lord Elis-Thomas said: "Again this shows what the FR is capable of and the emphasis the company puts on community links. It is nice to see that youngsters are given the opportunity to participate in events such as this and that skills, which many young people never get the opportunity to see let alone try-out, are afforded them. I am very impressed with what I see each time I come to the FR and I am very supportive of the company and the WHR project. I will try to persuade Welsh AM for Tourism Rhodri Glyn Tomos to visit the FR and see what is going on." Dr Prideaux added: "The training week works on many levels and I believe this success is something the FR can be proud of. We are offering an important resource to youngsters and the community, whilst highlighting what we do as a company. Take a step back, look around, and you see how much fun the youngsters are having- which is the epicentre of this event. Many former Kids Week participants have returned to either work on the railway or to volunteer, and in my opinion, this says it all. This week has been a big success and I extend my thanks to everybody involved."

Eileen Clayton says thank you to all of you who contributed in any way to the success of KTW - those who helped with the evening events, drove the morning trains, helped with carriage cleaning, guarded their trains, or supported us at Boston Lodge. I realise that such an event casts its ripples wide and that so many of you have helped in ways large and small. We deeply appreciate your help. The list of jobs achieved is large and includes:-

We hope that this compensates for the disruption caused by the event. Our grateful thanks to you all.
