Safety Notes

Making sure your visit is safe and enjoyable

As both the Railway and yourself have responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work etc., Act 1974, the following General Safety Rules have been prepared.

  • Obey all rules, signs and instructions.
  • Don’t take risks. If you don’t know ASK!
  • If you consider the job to be unsafe, stop and seek advice. Be safe, not sorry!
  • Know your evacuation procedure and the emergency assembly points.
  • Know where the fire fighting equipment and alarm points are.
  • Don’t let rubbish build up.
  • Never block fire escapes or prop open fire doors.
  • Look out for obvious hazards and report them.
  • Don’t put yourself or others at risk.
  • Never get involved in “Horseplay” – this leads to accidents!
  • Report every Accident, Incident or “Near Miss” to your supervisor immediately.
  • Don’t smoke in prohibited areas.
  • Keep clear of the tracks, unless your Supervisor tells you it is safe and your job requires you to be there.
  • Use the correct tools or equipment for the job, and use them safely.
  • Don’t use tools or equipment unless you are trained in their use and authorised to use them.
  • Don’t leave tools or equipment lying around causing a trip or other hazard.
  • Only use tools and equipment for the purpose for which they are designed.
  • Don’t misuse First Aid kits. Report any use of them to your supervisor.
  • Wear and use approved personal protective equipment and clothing where needed and as directed. Keep it in good condition.
  • NEVER report for duty under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Remember, the effects of these last long after consumption. NEVER drink on duty.
  • ALWAYS ensure that you are properly rested before taking up duty. Do Not work excessive hours.
